"Separation of powers" is intending to check the abuse of power by any one person or group. (Regarding question 12 above, the founders established a Republic, not a pure Democracy. That being said, they did form the US government to ensure the safety and equitable treatment of citizens.)
15. Briefly list three (3) political or legislative issues of most concern to you, and explain why each is important to you.
1) Partisan divide: Division and dysfunction in Congress is the most important issue effecting the United States. I'm running for Congress to counter the unproductive partisan wrangling that characterizes Congress with common-sense solutions and practical problem-solving. 2) Infrastructure: Our nation's roads, bridges, electrical grid, water and sewage systems, levies, etc. are crumbling. This infrastructure is the foundation of our civilization. We neglect it at our peril. I will work with my colleagues in Congress to prioritize spending to renew and rebuild critical infrastructure. 3) Regulatory reform: Congress needs to review burdensome regulations with the goal of simplifying, streamlining and when necessary, eliminating them. I support an incentives approach to regulatory policy as opposed to a punitive, mandate-focused approach. Encourage the private sector use innovation to meet incentives, not mandates.
16. Should abortion be allowed under extenuating circumstances? If so, what circumstances?
The issue of abortion should be between a woman and her family and doctor and not the business of government. I will say it would be beneficial to individuals and society if there were fewer abortions in the United States. The best way to achieve that goal is through education, birth control and the acceptance of personal responsibility.

God, Constitution, Supreme Court, Voters and Congress. Nothing is said in the Declaration or Constitution about academia, industry, media, or professional sports. I am hard pressed to assign them authority, at least in the context of this question.
18. Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I live my life based on a system of values, among them honesty, courage, sacrifice, patience, kindness, accountability, self-reliance and self-control. I believe that some truth can be found in most philosophies and religions. It is the individual's responsibility to seek the truth through ongoing study. My view on this is best summed up by a passage attributed to the Buddha: "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. Do not believe anything because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything because it is written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and the benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."
