14. Briefly list three (3) political or legislative issues of most concern to you, and explain why each is important to you.
Federal influence in education: The federal government's role in education should be returned to the states. The people must have representation in the decisions that are made regarding the education of their children. Elite, unelected Washington educrats should not be in a position to dictate a centrally planned, top-down education policy for the entire nation. Separation of powers: Congress has irresponsibly abdicated some of its authority to the Executive and Judicial branches. The Constitutional role of the House of Representatives must be restored and defended against encroachments by the other branches. Rule of law: This is a broad category at the heart of a number of issues. The Constitution states that the President "shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed." Whether it is border security, DOMA, or drug laws, the President is not given the option to enforce some laws and ignore others. The legislative process must be followed, even when it might not be popular.
15. Should abortion be allowed under extenuating circumstances? If so, what circumstances?
Abortion is a tragedy that always affects at least two lives. In cases of rape and when the life of the mother is in danger I would leave this decision to the family. Exceptions for rape should end with the first trimester. I have given this matter much thought over the years and believe that compassion for the unborn should exist along with compassion for the women in these situations. In cases where the life of the mother may be destroyed by a coerced decision by government, it is more appropriate that government not play a role. It is unacceptable that the U.S. accompanies North Korea, Communist China, and Canada as one of the four nations that embraces abortion-on-demand for any reason. As a society we need laws that protect the unborn, the infirm, and the elderly because, aside from moral considerations, a culture of death is not compatible with a free society.
16. Based on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, please arrange the following entities, starting with the highest source of authority, and continue the list in descending order of authority, skipping any that do not apply: Academia, Congress, Constitution, God, Industry, Media, Professional Sports, Supreme Court, Voters.
God (Natural Rights), Constitution, Voters, Congress, Supreme Court
17. Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am an evangelical Christian (Southern Baptist). I believe in divine creation, in the fallen condition of man, in the deity of Jesus Christ, that Jesus died for my sins and rose again, that I am unworthy of salvation, and yet saved by grace through faith. I approach life's challenges by leaning on the promise of 2 Timothy 1:7 that "God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and of self control." As a representative the guide of the golden rule in Luke 6:31 will lead me to represent my constituents as I would want to be represented. As an engineering manager, and in other leadership activities I follow a model of servant leadership. The position of representative is one of service to the people of the district, and the Constitution, and I will pursue it accordingly. Philippians 2:3-4 is prominently featured on my campaign site and business cards to reflect this intent.
