The cause and effect of a limited number of powerful factions. These factions, borne from self interest, would eventually lead to fringe candidates winning office, polarization and division of the people, and extreme and isolated discourse.

Although I grew up a "Reagan Republican," I switched parties due in part to the split in the Republican party, the party I grew up with and learned my political values. But mostly I changed as a result of the consequences borne from fringe candidates and extreme positions taking control of and directing the party.
