QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Strongly Agree
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.
Strongly Agree
I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.
Strongly Agree
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
Nothing is more fundamental or precious than the right to life. I am pro-life and believe the only exceptions should be in cases of rape, incest, and medical necessity to save the life of the mother. Additionally, all individuals, whether pro-life or pro-choice, should be appalled by the practice of late-term, partial-birth, and even post-birth abortion that more and more Democratic politicians, including here in Virginia, are advocating.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Strongly Agree
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
Strongly Agree
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
Yes
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
Separation of church and state means protecting the church from government intrusion. We must preserve our religious freedom to worship as we choose. This is a fundamental right and our first freedom.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Strongly Agree
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?
I experienced firsthand the wisdom of peace through strength serving under a great Commander-in-Chief Ronald Reagan. When Gaddafi attacked American forces in the Gulf of Sidra, President Reagan acted swiftly. I was part of the operation that eliminated Libya’s wartime capabilities and as a bombardier navigator, I sank one of Gaddafi’s gunboats. History shows that the only way to stop the bad guys is to stand up to them. I stood up to our enemies during my Naval career and I will do the same in Washington. Whether state actors or non-state aggressors like ISIS and Al Qaeda, I will stand up to those who are jeopardizing our security and safety. We must make sure our military is fully funded and must not back down in the global fight against radical Islamic terrorism.
HEALTHCARE
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.
Strongly Disagree
I support the elimination of private healthcare insurance.
Strongly Disagree
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
I know “Medicare for All” and other forms of socialized medicine don’t work. They will fail here just as they failed elsewhere, and those most in need will be even worse off. As a small business owner who screens and proposes healthcare plans for our company employees, I understand the challenges and believe the best way to reduce healthcare costs is to expand free market competition, not undermine it through burdensome over-regulation. In Congress, I will fight to reduce regulatory barriers that limit competition among healthcare providers. I will also support legislation that further promotes private sector innovation, such as expanding access to telemedicine. Additionally, I will fight to bring antibiotic manufacturing back to the United States. The coronavirus pandemic and the many drug recalls in recent years expose the vulnerability of American consumers. I’ll work to bring the manufacture of critical antibiotics home and protect the health and safety of Americans.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Strongly Disagree
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?
I believe we must protect Social Security and keep the promises we have made to retirees and those who entered the workforce and have been paying into the system for decades. In Congress, I will always stand up for these individuals. The surest way to preserve Social Security for current and future generations is to have a growing and prosperous economy and a strong workforce.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
I would question all government expenditures like I do in my company and in my household budget in order to ensure fiscal accountability. Ultimately, through fiscal accountability and a strong economy, we will reduce the national debt.
Under what circumstances should taxpayers help pay off existing student loans?
Only in the case of an individual becoming physically incapacitated do I think the government should get involved. I do believe student loan debt should be dischargeable in bankruptcy. I do not believe in free college or in government bailouts for student loans.
IMMIGRATION
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Strongly Agree
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished.
Strongly Disagree
State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.
Strongly Agree
Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.
Agree
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
As a naturalized citizen with a background in national security, I know we have work to do to reform immigration. We need an immigration system that is effective, uses the most current technology available, and rewards immigrants who want to come here legally. We also need to enforce the rule of law. I believe in tall walls and big doors. In Congress, I will advocate for an increased physical border, support our ICE agents, and push for an overhaul of our current immigration process that puts American interests first while maintaining our status as a beacon of hope and opportunity for those like my parents who come here to make a new life for themselves, enjoy the fruits of freedom and dignity, and pursue the American Dream.
EDUCATION
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Disagree
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.
Agree
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Our Founding Fathers had the wisdom to see why the right to keep and bear arms was so essential to freedom and that is why they ingrained it in our Constitution. I will always stand up for our Second Amendment rights. The only thing that is going to protect innocent people from a lawless individual with a gun is for lawful individuals to be able to protect themselves and others with guns. We must stop over-regulating and restricting the rights of law-abiding Americans.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.
Strongly Disagree
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Disagree
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Disagree
The Electoral College should be abolished.
Strongly Disagree
In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?
In Congress, my top three priorities will be fixing our veterans care system, ensuring that we continue to have a strong national defense, and ensuring a growing and prosperous economy. As a veteran, I've experienced the long wait lines, the burdensome processes, and the unnecessary regulations plaguing our veterans care programs. In Congress, I will cut the red tape, fix our broken Veterans Administration system, and find workable solutions that will support our nation's veterans. In Congress, I will also make sure we are prepared for global challenges and that we stand up to those who threaten our security and safety. Lastly. I will fight to protect President Trump's successful tax cuts, cut regulations, and help create more jobs by unleashing the potential of our free market economy.
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Yes, racism is a threat to our security and our American way of life. It cannot be tolerated. Racism is unacceptable and anti-American. We are a nation of ideas for people of every race who seek to pursue the American Dream and live in freedom in accordance with our laws and Constitution. Recent acts of white nationalism and antisemitism are deeply concerning. These are the products of fringe groups and do not represent who we are as a country.
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Conservative
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
As a naturalized citizen whose family emigrated here from Cuba when I was just two years old, I didn’t escape the perils of socialism and communism under Castro only to see us go down the same path here. Additionally, as a business owner and entrepreneur, I have experienced the challenges of leading a business to succeed in this highly over-regulated climate. I know that decreased regulations, pro-growth economic policies, and limited government are what allow businesses to flourish. I believe in American exceptionalism and that America's Judeo-Christian values and commitment to small government and individual liberty are what set us apart and truly make us great. My thirty year Naval career as a combat Naval aviator is a testament to my believe in a strong national defense, a constitutional mandate and one of the fundamental functions of our federal government.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I am blessed to be married to my wonderful wife Gretchen, and we have two beautiful girls. I’m running for Congress to ensure my daughters’ generation and the ones that come after them have the same opportunity to pursue the American Dream that I have.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Neutral
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a devout Catholic. My wife, Gretchen, is actually in the process of converting to Catholicism and joining the Catholic Church. We attend Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. As Christians, we believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior. My faith gives me hope in knowledge that death is not the end and that by conquering the grave, Christ gave us new life and the assurance of a better future. As Catholics, we believe in the two millennia-old wisdom of the Roman Catholic Church as the representation of Christ on earth until his return. We are raising our two young girls to similarly trust in the Lord and love our neighbors through their words and deeds.
