ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST

Yes

  • "'American elections are only for American citizens, and the cities in other states that have granted non-citizens the right to vote in local elections are undermining the value of what it means to be an American,' he [Secretary of State Frank LaRose] said in a statement." by Haley BeMiller. The Columbus Dispatch. May 18, 2022.

  • "Dan Stein, president of the D.C.-based Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), told The Ohio Star he believes ensuring all voters are citizens comports with basic civics in a democratic republic. 'Noncitizens are actually citizens of other countries, and owe their primary political allegiance to another nation where they can return home at any point,' he said. 'Giving the citizens of other countries the right to vote in state and local elections is contrary to the fundamental principles of self-governance and will ultimately tear apart the connections of a free and independent people.'” by Bradley Vasoli, "Language Finalized on Proposed Ohio Referendum Banning Noncitizen Voting". The Tennessee Star, August 25, 2022

  • "State Issue 2 would bar noncitizens from voting in Ohio local elections. The state constitution requires that all voters be citizens of Ohio and the United States to vote in state and county elections. Issue 2 would further clarify that citizenship be a requirement to vote in local municipal elections. This is a commonsense requirement that ensures that all elections in Ohio are decided by Ohio citizens." Ohio Council of County Officials

No

  • "This unnecessary constitutional amendment is cloaked in fear and false patriotism. It endangers the freedom of every citizen to vote. Currently, our constitution states 'every' U.S. citizen who meets age, residency, and registration requirements is qualified to vote. But, Issue 2 removes this inclusive language and replaces it with restrictive words that will lock into our constitution new deliberate barriers to voting...  its new restrictions threaten our 17-year-olds’ longstanding right to vote in primary elections." Vote “NO” argument prepared by Representatives Bishara W. Addison, Juanita O. Brent, Tavia Galonski, and Michael J. Skindell

  • "Since non-citizens are already barred from voting in federal and state elections, it’s really the state government reaching into local control issues. Also, it would keep 17-year-olds who will be 18 at general election time from being allowed to vote in primaries.  So it is an attack on the youth vote." Greene County Democratic Party

  • “'Immigrants serve as firefighters, they serve as police officers in our communities, they are homeowners, they contribute to our societies, they serve as schoolteachers, their kids go to schools in our community,' said state Rep. Mike Skindell, a Lakewood Democrat. 'And they have a right to have a voice, and we should allow that.'” By Julie Carr Smyth, Associated Press, May 25, 2022.
