“School choice in Colorado has a decades-long record of popularity among families and educators, opening doors for students to choose schools that better suit their needs backed by bipartisan support at the State Capitol. Despite this, school choice faces an annual barrage of legislative assaults – including an existential threat to charter schools this year. The most effective way to protect school choice in Colorado is to put this basic right into the state Constitution.” - Michael Tsogt, Policy Analyst, Advance Colorado Institute
-
“The best way to preserve the right to homeschool is to place the right to school choice (which includes homeschooling in its definition) in the constitution along with a recognition parents have the right to direct the education of their children. This would expand parents’ rights beyond what the federal government recognizes and would make Colorado the most homeschool-friendly state in the nation. This is great news for the ever-increasing number of families who want to make this choice.” - Kristi Burton Brown and Carrie Geitner, Homeschool Moms
-
“If passed, initiative 138 would create a right to school choice for every K-12 child and a right for parents “to direct the education of their children” in the Colorado Constitution. Despite bipartisan support for school choice programs across the country and research showing that a vast majority of school choice programs positively impact student outcomes, Colorado lawmakers have consistently refused to pass legislation to expand education opportunities for children. The right for parents to pursue the education that best works for their children should be enshrined in the Colorado Constitution as a way to provide all children with the opportunity to have a great education, regardless of their parents’ income-level.” - Colorado Catholic Conference
- "It's a misconception to think, oh by passing this we're opening the door and inviting the legislature to come in and regulate. I'm sorry, if that's what people think they're highly misguided. The legislature tomorrow, or really the next time they meet in session, could go take away your rights find quality education, take away your right to home school, say that private schools can't exist in Colorado. They could do that tomorrow if they wanted to do it and there's nothing stopping them. What amendment 80 would do is actually stop them from doing those things because it would put our right to direct education of our children, to choose home school, private school, Charter School, neighborhood Public School in the Constitution so the legislature has to stop interfering with it." “Amendment 80 is an unnecessary, duplicative, and misleading proposal that could devastate funding for our public schools while costing taxpayers millions of dollars. Disguised as a measure seeking to protect school choice in the state constitution, which Colorado families already have, 80 takes a permanent first step towards creating a voucher system, which would use taxpayer dollars to bankroll elite private school tuition. Voucher systems divert critical resources from already-underfunded public schools and funnel them to unaccountable private schools that do not have to meet state education standards or teach scientifically sound curriculum. A properly funded, high-quality education system for all Colorado’s kids is critical to strong, prosperous communities and to our state’s future. Amendment 80 is not about choice since Colorado families already have the ability to send their child to the school that best fits their needs. It’s about creating a voucher program that will funnel money to exclusionary, expensive, and unaccountable private schools at the expense of our kids’ education and our public schools.” - Protect Public Schools

“Initiative 138 would open the door to taking money out of neighborhood public schools to pay for private schools, which directly harms our students. Stealing funds from our public schools and sending them to elitist institutions, in any format, would only encourage economic, racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination in our society. Aren’t we tired of these schemes that take from the many and give to the few? At the end of the day, taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be siphoned out of our kids’ public schools to fund private schools.” - Kevin Vick, President, Colorado Education Association

“Colorado parents already have the right to send their children to any public, charter, private, or home school they want. Amendment 80, however, is a trojan horse that pretends to be something it is not. Disguised as a measure seeking to protect "school choice," Amendment 80 attempts to create a foothold that could lead to a statewide voucher program. Voucher programs use public taxpayer dollars to bankroll and fund private schools. They divert critical resources from already underfunded public schools and funnel them to private schools that discriminate against students and families and do not have to meet state education standards or serve all students. Public schools serve 95% of our kids and families, and we must not jeopardize the education of the vast majority of our kids to benefit the wealthy few who are already enrolled in private school.” - ACLU of Colorado
- "A simple reading of the School Choice Ballot Measure (Amendment 80) text implies that the child holds the right to school choice, while parents can only “direct” the child’s education. This separation of a child’s right to school choice from the parent’s right to direct the education of their children could undermine parental rights and increase government interference in the exercise of school choice." - Christian Home Educators of Colorado
