What is the function of the local school board?
The function of the board is to select, monitor and sometimes replace superintendents. As board members we also create policy that impacts our community and our children's education. We also set the tax rate and approve the budget. Most importantly we represent the district in a positive manner at all levels of government.
Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?
Our curriculum, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and referred to as the TEKS, is set by the legislature. The district then decides the most effective manner to deliver the TEKS. The state provides the structure and the main components and then the distinct can purchase and use supplemental materials to support our children's unique needs.
Please rate in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): Mathematics, Information Technology, Science, Political Activism, Personal Finances, Gender Identity, Physical Fitness, American History, Critical Race Theory, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Sexuality, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning
The single most important thing that a district can teach is not listed here. The ability to read is essential. Research tells us that the basis of all learning is reading and logic that is usually thought through math. Without the ability to read our students can not learn about or contribute to any of the subjects listed above. Once we have set the foundation of learning with math and literacy students can learn and grow as far as their minds can take them. The actual ranking of subjects is done by the state and reflected by the number of student expectations spelled out in the TEKS.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?
The state of Texas says that sex education is to be initially introduced in 4th grade by a teacher.
If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex
I do support the teaching of sex education but the content is determined by parent consent.
No school official should be involved in the sexual transitioning of a student. All issues on this subject should be referred to the parents of the student.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a Catholic and I believe that one of the most important things we have been charged with is to care for our brothers and sisters. I think that helping everyone get a solid education is the best way to do that.
Why are you running for this office?
I am running for Disrtict 1 Trustee because I want to have a positive impact on our communities education. I want to help ensure that the policies we create and enforce help provide for an equitable return to school and make sure all our students have equal access to opportunities. I would also like to help select an effective superintendent for our community. We have unique strengths and needs the I want to make sure are addressed.

What books have had the most profound impact on your view of life?
As an English teacher, I would have to say the compilation of all the books I have read have had a huge impact on my life and views. I have focused on different types of authors and genres to enrich my life and help me gain a better perspective on different cultures and ways of life.
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
The combination of my upbringing, career and volunteering makes me uniquely qualified to serve. I started my career teaching middle and high school English in YISD. I later became certified as a principal and as a Mediator for Educators. I have two grown children that went to Mesita, Wiggs and El Paso High. While my children attended school I worked, volunteered in the community and at school. I was the treasurer and PTA president at Mesita, the Band Booster treasurer at Wiggs, volunteered at church in children's ministries and was secretary of the Children’s Grief Center. I underwent a life altering back surgery that reinforced my belief in helping others. I currently work as an educational consultant and my company focuses on reading materials in Spanish and English. Finally, my father’s military career allowed me to experience learning in many different systems. I have centered my life around children, both my own and others. I would love to continue serving as a trustee.
