Education

What is the function of the local school board?

The remit of the Board of Trustees is to provide local, governance and oversight for a school district on behalf of the citizens of that community. Boards function as a 'body corporate' and therefore individual trustees have no power individually outside of the Board. Governance means that the trustees oversee decision-making and the way procedures, processes and actions are structured, delivered and sustained and oversight means to provide watchful supervision. The board has one employee, the Superintendent, and the role of the board is to search for, hire, guide and support the Superintendent to lead the district to insure safety and compliance and deliver continuously improvement in student performance.

Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?

The 10th amendment designates that "the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution … are reserved to the States respectively". Therefore, the state adopts curriculum standards that are to be used in all Texas public schools. The current standards, adopted by the State Board of Education, outline what students should learn in each course or grade and these are defined as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). School districts can offer courses and activities in their instructional program beyond those required by the state and can select materials to supplement the state-selected materials.

Please rate in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): Mathematics, Information Technology, Science, Political Activism, Personal Finances, Gender Identity, Physical Fitness, American History, Critical Race Theory, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Sexuality, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning

Qualifications

Why are you running for this office?

I currently serve on the Board of Trustees for KatyISD and I am the only board member who has actually been a public-school teacher. While my 25-year engineering career has provided me with valuable business skills in contract management, financial and data analysis, and strategic leadership, my 6 years in a KatyISD classroom gave me hands-on knowledge of curriculum development, assessment and accountability, instructional strategies and classroom management. I believe this combination of business acumen and education experience makes me an effective and well-qualified board member. I am passionate about STEM education for Americans and devoted to teacher well-being.

A candidate's personal moral values should not be relevant when considering a candidacy for elective office.
