Strongly Agree

Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?

A partnership between parents/families, schools, and churches is ideal for teaching sex education. Age-appropriate sex education helps empower children and can make them less vulnerable to future sexual abuse. Withholding information from children about their own bodies can cause them to seek out sources that aren't helpful. Therefore, I believe we should be proactive with kids in regards to sex education, while being sensitive to their age and maturity level. Books like It's Not the Stork! and Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr. can help even elementary kids start to understand basics while not overwhelming them with unnecessarily grown up details. Children who read these books with a trusted parent/guardian will have a solid foundation for learning more as they continue to grow.

If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex

All of the topics listed are important to teach our youth. Consent in particular is a topic that needs to be taught to children, and this concept can be taught in a variety of contexts that are not sex-education specific. Learning about consent helps children better protect themselves in situations where they may be vulnerable. I also believe that sexual abuse warning signs and sexual abuse prevention are vital to teach our children. Statistically, an alarming number of both girls and boys are sexually abused every year. It's up to us to work hard to lower this number significantly. The right sex education can help with this. Timing and context for sex education is everything. Elementary sex education will look quite a bit different from high school sex education. I believe that empowering youths with age-appropriate and complete information shows that adults have faith in the youths' abilities to make good personal decisions when it comes to sex.

Values

No school official should be involved in the sexual transitioning of a student. All issues on this subject should be referred to the parents of the student.

Strongly Agree

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.

Neutral

Teachers should not use alternative names and pronouns without parental permission.

Disagree

Therapy for children who have unwanted same-sex attraction should be banned.

No Answer

I support allowing students to use public restrooms, showers, and changing rooms, and to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.

Neutral

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

My values are integrity, honesty, and relentless dedication to what is right. I seek to reflect truth in everything I do. Hard work and humility go a long way.

Qualifications

Why are you running for this office?

I admire what HEB ISD has accomplished. I want to give moms with younger children like myself a voice in the public space. I want my child and her classmates to continue to have an abundance of excellent public school options locally. And service to the community is very important to me.

A candidate's personal moral values should not be relevant when considering a candidacy for elective office.

Disagree

Which of the 11 objectives specified in the Texas Education Code is your highest priority?

Objective 5: Educators will prepare students to be thoughtful, active citizens who have an appreciation for the basic values of our state and national heritage and who can understand and productively function in a free enterprise society.

What books have had the most profound impact on your view of life?

How To Win Friends & Influence People, What Is a Girl Worth?, In Shock

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

I am, first and foremost, a mother. My daughter is my world, and I am passionate about making it a better place for her and her classmates to grow up in. I am also a music educator. I have worked in both the public and private spheres of education. Coming from a family of educators - both my mom and my brother are public school teachers - I have seen up close how vital it is to have a diversity of voices in the decision room. Connecting with my students on a personal level first is my secret for developing in them a genuine love of learning, no matter the subject. As a musician myself, I am fiercely dedicated to keeping and expanding arts programs at every school grade level. And I am willing to listen, learn, and help continuously improve our school system.

Considering all issues (social, economic, national security, etc.), which of these best describes you?

Please defend your answer to the previous question by referencing your publicly available track record.
