Questionnaire

Please note: Responses are entered electronically by the candidate and are listed verbatim.

Right to Life

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Strongly Agree

I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.

Agree

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

Abortion should be allowed if medical professionals deem that the life of the mother is in grave danger.

Economy

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.

Disagree

Religious Liberty

Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.

Strongly Agree

Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.

Disagree

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Agree

The Ten Commandments should not be displayed in public school buildings or court houses.

Disagree

I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.

Yes

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

It means that the government cannot infringe its will upon the people with regards to religion nor can they favor one religion over another. The First Amendment allows us freedom to practice the religion of our choice.

National Security

The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.

Agree

Education

The federal government should mandate standards and requirements (such as Common Core) for local schools.

Strongly Disagree

Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Strongly Agree

I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.

Agree

Values

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.

Agree

I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.

Neutral

I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.

Disagree

Parents should have the right to know what schools are teaching their children about sex and LGBT issues and should have the right to opt their children out of any instruction to which they object.

Strongly Agree

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am life-long Christian and believe that God sent his Son in the person of Jesus Christ so that we would have an advocate with the Father and experience His kingdom on earth. Faith in Jesus is open to ALL persons regardless of where you were born or who you are or what you have done. Sin is that which separates us from God and grace means that we are ALL forgiven.

Qualifications

I voted in these primaries and general elections:

2016 Republican Primary, 2016 General Election, 2018 Republican Primary, 2018 General Election

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

I'm not sure what you are asking for here.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

a. I have experienced our public schools from every possible perspective: teacher, parent, policymaker, volunteer, higher education liaison, and workforce development expert. These experiences have provided me with unique insights into what works in education and what does not. My work experience has taught me that honest conversations with education advocates centered around data rather than partisan politics is key to create change; that a highly qualified teacher in every classroom and highly competent leaders who support teachers in every building are the most important reforms we can accomplish for students; and that third grade is too late to begin remediating students who can't read. My relationships within the early childhood education community, the State Board of Education, NC Department of Public Instruction, the legislature, district superintendents, community college presidents, and college of education deans will help me foster a collaborative education community.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

NO

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

My top three priorities heading into this role would be: 1. Work with the legislature to enact the best policy recommendations made by the West Ed and the Leandro findings, including changing our funding formulas to allow for equity of resources. 2. Retool and revamp efforts to ensure our students are proficient readers PRIOR to 3rd grade, including supporting efforts to ensure colleges of education are using research-backed methods of early literacy instruction with pre-service teachers. 3. Grant local teachers, principals, and superintendents the flexibility they need to overcome the unique challenges their students face and to make the decisions they need to ensure their students succeed.

2nd Amendment

Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?

No
