Right to Life

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Strongly Agree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.

Strongly Agree

I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.

Strongly Agree

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

I am pro-life. I know that life begins at conception and I believe in the dignity of each and every life. If we are truly a nation of opportunity and equality, then we must be a nation that values the dignity of each and every man, woman, and child. I have always been and will always be a proud voice for the unborn and will fight against the radical pro-abortion interests that have worked to dehumanize our most vulnerable – the unborn. While in the Alabama State Senate I supported, wrote and passed pro-life legislation. My wife, Susan, and I have worked with and supported the Women’s Resource Center (Sav-A-Life) since 1986.

Economy

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.

Strongly Disagree

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

We must find a way to tackle entitlement spending that accounts for almost 70 percent of the federal budget and will only continue to increase if nothing is done. One of the greatest threats to our nation’s future and to the future we owe our children and grandchildren is the federal government’s unwillingness to cut wasteful spending and reduce the national debt. The fact that Washington, DC is taking so much of our hard-earned money to feed their wasteful habits is shameful. I believe that the people of Alabama, not the bureaucrats in Washington, know how to best spend our hard-earned money. I helped balance every state budget when I was in the Alabama Senate, fought for Budget Reform and fought every Alabama-wide tax increase. I do support adding a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution and believe we must act to address the entitlement growth that threatens to bankrupt the United States in a short period of years.

What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?

I believe agencies should initiate across the board cuts, forcing every department to work to eliminate redundancies and institute efficiencies. I’d like to see more federal government positions/departments moved away from Washington, D.C., which would reduce costs and put the government closer to the people. We must find a way to tackle entitlement spending that accounts for almost 70 percent of the federal budget and will only continue to increase if nothing is done.

Under what circumstances should taxpayers help pay off existing student loans?

I would need to study existing programs that pay off student loans for active duty military personnel who commit to service.

Religious Liberty

Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.

Strongly Agree

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Strongly Agree

I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.

Yes

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

I believe in the Constitution, which says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." But it doesn't mean religion or religious values should be excluded from public life. Because all life is precious in God’s eyes, I supported the life of the unborn by passing a law to make the selling of baby body parts illegal, and participated in other laws to shut down abortion providers in Alabama. I also created a law to protect our Faith-based adoption agencies in the state, and attempted to pass laws which would stop sanctuary cities in our state.

Healthcare

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.

Strongly Disagree

I support the elimination of private healthcare insurance.

Strongly Disagree

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

In the State Senate I led the successful effort to stop the Obamacare expansion in Alabama. Our current healthcare system of Obamacare is broken, and we must fully repeal and replace it. I support a plan to overhaul healthcare in the form of block grants to the state to enable them to innovate and develop more efficient ways of delivering care. In doing so, we can reduce the size and scope of the federal government, perhaps even moving some federal jobs away from Washington to the states where they will place federal employees among the people and reduce costs to taxpayers. The radical, socialist ideas of liberals to socialize our healthcare system is exactly the wrong idea. We must innovate, not stifle our healthcare sector to ensure that costs are reduced, care is improved, and opportunities are opened for the people of south Alabama to receive the care they need. The goal should be putting patients and doctors back in charge of their own care.

National Security

The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.

Strongly Agree

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

I support President Trump’s efforts to disrupt and defeat ISIS. You saw his commitment and resolve just recently with the mission to kill Abu Bakr al Baghdadi. We must defeat ISIS, we must support our ally Israel, and we must never return to a pre-9/11 mindset that allowed these radical Islamists to fester and grow. I support the sanctions against Iran, as well, and President’s Trump’s withdrawal from the “Iran Nuclear Deal”, an agreement which has, reportedly, done much to fuel terrorist activities in the region. Iran has continued to test ballistic missiles in violation of U.N. prohibitions and has been shown to be in violation of their agreement with the USA. Furthermore, the agreement does not restrict Iran from manufacturing nuclear weapons upon expiration of the provisions. Iran has been very clear about its intention to destroy Israel.

Immigration

I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.

Strongly Agree

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished.

Strongly Disagree

State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.

Strongly Agree

Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.

Strongly Agree

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

When it comes to ending illegal immigration, one thing is clear: the Trump-haters cannot admit when he does the right thing. Thanks to President Trump, we are starting to see a drop in illegal border crossings because he took responsible action to stop illegal immigration. More recently, and thanks to Mexico’s implementation of complementary policy, we have seen the number of border apprehensions decline. The reason Mexico is now helping to stop the illegal flow of people across their nation, and into ours, is because President Trump’s leadership. He has shown his ability to negotiate with Canada, North Korea, China and others. His negotiations have given him a reputation as someone not afraid of taking action. We need to close asylum loopholes that exploit our laws.

Education

Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Strongly Disagree

Values

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.

Strongly Agree

I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.

Strongly Disagree

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I'm a Christian. I committed my life to Jesus when I was 16 years old and since then I've been a student of the word. My life has been about serving Him in whatever capacity I've found myself - business, ministry, overseas missions. The bible has a profound effect upon me and I continue to use it as my guidebook. We need to go back to fundamental principles like the Bible and the Ten Commandments.

Qualifications

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

I had one of the most conservative voting records in the Alabama State Senate. I have signed the Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge. As a member of the Alabama State Senate I opposed every tax increase and worked to institute a state Flat Tax. In the State Senate, I introduced and passed out of committee the Flat Tax for Alabama. Instituting the Flat Tax at the federal level would effectively abolish the IRS. I also fought for budget reform and opposed every Alabama-wide tax increase. In the State Senate I led the successful effort to stop the Obamacare expansion in Alabama.I do support adding a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution and believe we must act to address the entitlement growth that threatens to bankrupt the United States in a short period of years. I have signed the Term Limits pledge. I brought term limits legislation to the floor of the Alabama Senate (where it was unfortunately defeated).

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

no

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I believe that our nation and the values we hold, especially here in coastal Alabama, are under attack. There is an increasing interest of Socialism within the Democratic Party. While these are friendly ideas in California and New York, we know Socialism is an assault on our liberty. As one of the most conservative State Senators (2013-2018) in the Alabama State Senate, I understand the threat that this type of political movement places upon us. And as this district’s next Congressman, I will work to encourage strong families, ensure free markets, require limited government, and fund a capable military. I have fought legislatively for lower taxes and tax reform, religious liberty, life of the unborn, and government transparency. I have taken on the leadership of our state when they were wrong. I didn’t just vote to eliminate laws. I fought for the people I represented. And if I have the privilege to serve as the next Congressman for District 1, I will hit the ground running.

Criminal Justice

Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.

Strongly Agree

2nd Amendment

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

I am a proud constitutional conservative who understands that our Founders placed our Second Amendment where they did for a reason. Our Second Amendment is there to protect our First Amendment and as Lifetime Member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) I will proudly defend each and every American’s right to bear arms.

Other Important Issues

I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.

Strongly Disagree

I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Strongly Disagree

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Strongly Disagree

The Electoral College should be abolished.

Strongly Disagree

In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?

I believe that our nation and the values we hold, especially here in coastal Alabama, are under attack. There is an increasing interest of Socialism within the Democratic Party. While these are friendly ideas in California and New York, we know Socialism is an assault on our liberty. As one of the most conservative State Senators (2013-2018) in the Alabama State Senate, I understand the threat that this type of political movement places upon us.

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
