Right to Life

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Strongly Agree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.

Strongly Agree

I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.

Strongly Agree

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

None.

Economy

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.

Strongly Disagree

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

I support reform to preserve and protect Social Security. The number one way to do that is to create policies that allow the private sector to thrive and keep our economy growing. If we have strong economic growth and full employment, it makes the problem of preserving Social Security easier.

What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?

The government wastes hundreds of billions annually on spending most Americans consider wasteful. There are hundreds of billions that could be saved through more efficient operations and eliminating fraud in programs like Medicare and Medicaid. There are many ineffective programs that should be eliminated entirely. Other programs are duplicative of programs run at the state level. Congress should create a committee dedicated to rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse to save money.

Under what circumstances should taxpayers help pay off existing student loans?

None.

Religious Liberty

Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.

Strongly Agree

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.

Strongly Agree

I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.

Yes

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

States should not infringe on the right of individuals to practice their religion and the state should not sponsor religion.

Healthcare

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.

Strongly Disagree

I support the elimination of private healthcare insurance.

Strongly Disagree

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

We need a patient-centered, market-based approach to increase price transparency, encourage competition, and empower health care consumers to control health care decisions and spending. This would be the opposite approach of the Medicare For All plans being promoted by Democrat presidential candidates. The last thing we need is a government takeover of health care.

National Security

The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.

Strongly Agree

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

I support the President's National Strategy for Counterterrorism and agree with him that we must use all available tools at our disposal to combat terrorist groups, starve them of support, and prevent them from recruiting new followers. By continuing to maintain a strong and modernized military and superior data and intelligence capabilities, we can deny terrorists freedom to travel, fundraise, communicate, and recruit.

Immigration

I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.

Strongly Agree

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished.

Strongly Disagree

State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.

Strongly Agree

Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.

Agree

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

We need a border security first approach to immigration reform. Those we allow to immigrate must be able to pass background checks with no criminal history or terrorist ties. Our immigration priorities should be informed by the labor needs of our country. My belief is we should want the best and brightest from other countries who want to live here and be productive members of society to make our country better. It seems the Democrat presidential candidates want open borders and no law enforcement. My view is that is a recipe for disaster. We must respect the rule of law, and we must enforce our nation's immigration laws.

Education

Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.

Strongly Disagree

Values

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.

Strongly Agree

I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.

Strongly Disagree

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I make every decision based upon my religious beliefs. I pray over challenging decisions. We attend church regularly and raised our three children to be active in the church.

Qualifications

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

We have issues content on my website at McMurtryForCongress.com and on our Facebook page.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

No.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

We need a Congressman who is present and visible in our communities. We need a Congressman who keeps his promises, like delivering funding for the Brent Spence Bridge. Our Congressman should respond to and assist our citizens when they face difficulties dealing with the federal government. I will restore the high level of customer service we enjoyed under Jim Bunning and Geoff Davis. We need a Congressman who is focused on results for Kentucky. My opponent is widely considered one of the least effective members of Congress, in the bottom 3% of all 435 members. In seven years, not only has he never passed a single bill through the House, he’s never even gotten a bill out of committee. We deserve better, and I will restore the competence and hard work Kentuckians expect from our Representative.

Criminal Justice

Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.

Strongly Agree

2nd Amendment

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

None.

Other Important Issues

I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.

Strongly Disagree

I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Strongly Disagree

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Strongly Disagree

The Electoral College should be abolished.

Strongly Disagree

In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?

My experience defending a student who was vilified by the national news media has led me to want to author a bill to criminalize doxxing of minors by adults. Anyone who publishes a minor's personal information with the intent to harass, abuse, or frighten them could be slapped with criminal charges. Additionally I believe we need to make the Trump tax cuts permanent and expand the law's expensing provisions to help our farmers and small businesses thrive.

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

No. Racism is abhorrent, and we as families and believers should work to stamp it out where it exists. However, I believe the national media over-hypes racism for ratings.
