Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds or grants from federal, state, or local governments.
I support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires health care providers to provide life-saving treatment for infants who survive an attempted abortion.
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
Elective abortion should be completely illegal. Abortion should only be legal in the narrow circumstance that the continuation of a pregnancy to term poses a substantial, life-threatening risk to the mother.
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?
We have an obligation to ensure that Social Security continues to provide the benefits Americans earn over the course of their careers. In Congress, I will take that obligation seriously, and ensure it is met.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
By spending and borrowing without regard for consequences, we dig a bigger and bigger hole that our children and grandchildren will be left to deal with. We must bring down government spending. First, we must root out waste, fraud, and abuse. Next, we have to assess whether spending exceeds the proper, limited role of government. We'll have to make some tough choices, but leaving our children a strong economy unencumbered by crippling debt is a goal well worth achieving.
Under what circumstances should taxpayers help pay off existing student loans?
There are many existing avenues for student loan borrowers to work with the federal government to make their payments more manageable and meet their obligations. I support these options, but I oppose mass student loan forgiveness and "free college for all." These are bad and unfair policies.
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
The First Amendment assures Americans the freedom to live their faith without fear of coercion by government. In recent decades, liberals have contorted its meaning to banish prayer from our schools and eliminate expressions of Christian faith from the public square. Our Founding Fathers would shudder at the thought of the First Amendment being used to ban a classroom prayer, a Ten Commandments monument, a cross, or a nativity scene from a government-controlled place. We need to return to the original intention of the Founding Fathers: to allow the freedom to express faith without government interference.
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has health insurance.
I support the elimination of private healthcare insurance.
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
I've spent over 25 years as a physician. The free market, not government control, is the key to reducing health care costs, thus increasing affordability and accessibility. Health care should be more transparent and more competitive, with patients and their doctors empowered to make the best decisions. Competition will drive efficiency and quality while reducing costs. At the same time, we must use litigation reform and regulatory reform to cut red tape and allow providers to put patients ahead of paperwork. With more choices, more transparency, and the most efficient use of providers, we can greatly improve our healthcare system and the health of this nation.
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?
We must continue to relentlessly take the fight to our enemy, using the military, intelligence, and law enforcement resources of the United States to disrupt and destroy terrorist networks. Our nation must remain vigilant against the threat of radical Islamic terrorism, fully funding and supporting the work of the brave men and women who investigate and stop terrorist plots. States that support terrorism, like Iran, should face the toughest sanctions and other consequences we can impose.
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished.
State and federal funds should be denied to any public or private entity, including but not limited to sanctuary cities, that are not in compliance with immigration laws.
Employers should be required to use E-verify to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
I support President Trump's efforts to make our immigration system better-administered, better-controlled, and very secure. President Trump understands that our immigration system must meet our country's needs and serve the interests of the American people first. We are a good nation, but the reality is that we cannot accept and support everyone. We need to be discerning in determining immigration on the basis of merit, skill, and employment situation.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
As a devout Christian and lifelong Catholic, I believe the Bible to be the Word of God, and Jesus to be the Son of God and our Savior. I believe this great country is truly "one nation under God." My faith is at the center of my values system, and informs my political views. I believe every life, before and after birth, is a precious gift from God, for we are all God's children. I believe in treating others with decency, fairness, and grace. I believe God's providence has guided this nation to greatness, and that He will continue to provide for us if we put our faith in Him.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
Voters shouldn't just take my word for it -- they should judge me on how I've lived my values. I believe in a strong national defense, and I've served my country in uniform. As the father of six kids, five of them adopted, I'm 100% pro-life, and have been endorsed by the Kansans for Life PAC. I'm a fiscal conservative, and have stewarded taxpayer dollars like they were my own. I've spent over 25 years working and investing alongside farmers and ranchers, listening to their concerns, and I'll be a strong voice for agriculture in Washington. I'm a lifelong Republican, and I've been a supporter of President Trump's from the beginning. My positions are very conservative, and so are the values I've lived.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I'm a proud Christian, pro-life, pro-gun, pro-agriculture, pro-Trump Republican. I'm a conservative fighter, and I'll be a strong ally of President Trump as he continues to implement his America First agenda.
Mandatory minimum sentencing should be required and enforced for violent crimes.
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I'm a lifetime member of the NRA, and I fully support Americans' Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. In Congress, I will fight unconstitutional gun restrictions and protect gun owners' rights. Unconstitutional restrictions limit our freedoms and lessen public safety.
iVoterGuide Note: Candidate received an AQ rating from the NRA Political Victory Fund KS in 2020. https://www.nrapvf.org/grades/kansas/
I support BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanction) against Israel if they refuse to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
The Electoral College should be abolished.
In priority order, what three areas of legislation do you propose to author or sponsor if elected?
Agriculture is the economic lifeblood of the Big First District, and ensuring that agriculture and trade policy helps Kansas farmers and ranchers will be my top priority. Secondly, we need to help our economy recover by providing tax and regulatory relief to job-creators and families and investing in rural economic development. Thirdly, we need to advance our Kansas conservative values, from better protecting unborn life to strengthening our Second Amendment freedoms.
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Of our six kids, five are adopted, and all of our adopted children are people of color. I'm certainly not blind to the fact that there are still those who judge others by their skin color rather than their character. However, I believe that these backwards, hateful people constitute a small minority of our country, and that the vast majority of Americans are generous, fair, and decent. I don't believe we should characterize the many by the bad actions of the few, whether they are police officers or everyday citizens. The vast majority of police officers are brave, diligent public servants, and I support them in their critical work of keeping us safe and enforcing our laws.
