Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
I am in favor of construction of a wall and other necessary infrastructure on our border that gives complete control over entering and exiting the United States.
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.
It is the government’s responsibility to be sure everyone has a livable income.
It is the government’s responsibility to be sure everyone has health insurance.
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which permitted our system of limited government.
More restrictive gun control is needed to protect public safety.
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Additional regulations are needed to prevent climate change.
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
The United States should help defend Israel from attack by its enemies.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments.
Islamic law (Sharia) should take precedence over national and state laws where there are Islamic majority communities in the U. S.
Congress should pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
People should be allowed to use public restrooms, showers, and changing rooms based on "gender identity."
I support sanctuary cities.
It is OK for Congress to exempt itself from compliance with laws applicable to all citizens.
I support the death penalty.
Tuition-free public education should be guaranteed through college.
The United States should protect its sovereignty from the United Nations.
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
I voted in these primaries and general elections:
2012 General Election, 2014 Democratic Primary, 2016 General Election, 2016 Democratic Primary
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
I believe such decision should be made between a woman and her physician.
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?
Terrorism can come from any faith or more likely lack thereof - I object to your question as loading it against Islam. My friends who are Muslim are peaceful, family loving Americans. The United States should stop bombing indiscriminately. The President should only use force and go to war when authorized by Congress.
What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?
Good question. Although I am human, I cannot really speculate as to the nature of mankind. I believe though that "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Having three branches of government I believe has served the United States well.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
God is great. Religion is great as it does good for mankind.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
I ran twice against the current NY-7 incumbent in 2014 and 2016, believing that our Congress should represent the people, not the bank, corporate and other special interest PACS. In 2016, I sued the Democratic National Committee in the Southern District of New York as a supporter of Bernie Sanders, who felt disenfranchised by the DNC's use super delegates, as well as their unscrupulous actions to undermine the campaign of Senator Sanders and promote Secretary Clinton during the primary (including using Sen. Sanders' faith against him). I am sure there are some news articles available too that describe my political viewpoints, as well as my website, www.JeffKurzon.com
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
The United States is at a disadvantage to other countries like Canada or in Europe who have a single-payer healthcare system. Healthcare is too expensive for too many, and should be a right guaranteed to all Americans. I believe it would help save businesses money and also put more money in the pockets of most Americans if we have Medicare for All.
What role should government play in boosting the economy?
There are many simple ways we can improve our economy for all. For example: -Paid Parental Leave -Medicare for All -Universal Pre-K -Student loan forgiveness and tuition-free public colleges and trade schools -Economic incentives for freelancers, small businesses and artists -Building new public housing -Updating our current public housing to modern standards -Investing in solar, wind and other renewable energies to create new Green jobs -Regulating and taxing the legal sale of cannabis -Building more schools and community space -Reducing taxes for small business owners, freelancers and caregivers -Universal basic income to ensure that no person has to live in poverty and local economies can flourish
What changes should be made to the tax code?
It is too complex. I believe in "return free filing" where the government gives you a bill, and then you can "do your taxes" if you disagree with the government's estimate. Also, the carried interest tax loophole should be closed. For example, it seems wrong that Warren Buffet would pay a lesser tax percentage than that of his secretary. Generally, there are too many subsidies and benefits to the fossil-fuel industry, as well as other corporate and bank interests. This is because they hire lobbyists and give PAC contributions to incumbent candidates. Changing the way we finance elections will allow us to have a more fair tax code.
What is the best way to bring down unemployment?
Am currently studying universal basic income as I believe it could bring about meaningful change to local economies, create growth for all and eradicate poverty. Automation could lead to continued job loss. See Yang2020.com People need a roof over their heads in order to work, which is a human thing to do, even if you are a billionaire. The government can invest in education, so that our citizens are confident to compete in our global economy. This investment in education (tuition-free public college and trade schools) will yield dividends for generations to come. As someone who lost his job in the past (2009), I believe we should encourage job seekers to start businesses as an alternative to finding a job. We should promote policies to enable small businesses ("mom and pops") to succeed, rather than the status quo that seems to favor big business. Again, this is because incumbent politicians take PAC and lobbyist money from these big corporations.
How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?
We are all in the same boat economically. I believe there are bi-partisan solutions to ensure that our seniors can live their golden years in dignity. One thing that I believe is not discussed is means testing. Certain individuals of high-net worth may not need the payment and may be willing to forego it. We also need to design a tax structure based on shifts in demographics to ensure that seniors get their payments.
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
In undergrad, I studied sociology and believe became aware of groups who were and are discriminated against. Living in Canada I believe helped shape my political beliefs. As well, studying law in Canada, France and Italy, as well as working in Hong Kong, China, I believe made me sensitive to what it means to be "American." I want to be proud of my country and proud to call myself American. By living abroad, I became aware of what non-Americans think of Americans. Working as a lawyer means that I advocate for my clients. I believe I can help write laws as well, as well as advocate for social and economic justice. Running for office twice before (Democratic primaries) helped me become familiar with my district and the people living in it, many of whom suffer economically because of our current laws.
E-mail address and phone number for voters to reach you:
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
Some of your survey questions I could not answer because I need clarification as to their meanings, for example, question 11 "Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law," I cannot answer as it seems double-barreled (but yes, I strongly agree that religious liberty deserves the highest level of protection under the law). As for question 23, I may have voted in other elections as well. My campaign is about changing the practice and custom of how elections are financed; then the law can be changed. Politicians should represent the interests of their constituents. When politicians take money from PACs and lobbyists, they become conflicted. For example, the NY-7 incumbent takes bank PAC money, but then it is her job to regulate the banks on the House Financial Services Committee. This conflict of interest is rampant in our Congress. I refuse PAC and lobbyist money as I want a government that works for the people. Thank you
