Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

I believe that Roe v. Wade set up a good standard for abortion, it is the fundamental right of women to determine when and how their bodies are being used. I believe that it is a fundamental American right, and a right that must be preserved, to allow women to determine their own future and own paths. Specifically, I support uninhibited access in the first trimester, doctor-supervised access in the second trimester, and only in life-threatening cases determined by medical professionals in the third trimester.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

I believe that we must always take a diplomacy first approach to any type of military conflict. It is the job of Congress to determine when military strikes should be executed and we must move away from being a society of violence toward a society of peace. Our military actions have destabilized an entire region and we must take accountability for that. We must move toward building schools, providing water and electricity, and establishing a framework by which these cultures can thrive. American Imperialism must end and we must focus on enriching lives, not ending them.

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

Mankind has a tendency toward greed and this is seen no better place than in our current political system. Corporations donate openly toward representatives, those representatives then turn around and represent those corporations and not persons. Power, money, and greed, all corrupt persons and we must take aims at preventing that from extending further than it has.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

When Jesus was asked what the two greatest commandments were he included to love your neighbor as yourself. We cannot call ourselves moral persons if we do not care for the disadvantaged, the disenfranchised, or the needy in our communities. It is the moral duty of every person to fight for their neighbor and to find ways to make their lives better. I believe that as a representative and as an American that this is the greatest commandment and one that I try to hold my life to.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Liberal

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

You can check out my (nearly) full list of issues that I support at http://votesarahsmith.com A couple quick highlights: 1. I believe we must end the 8 undocumented conflicts that our Executive office has gotten us into since passing the AUMF. 2. I support an immediate plan to forgiving student debt and paving the way for free education, K-College for all Americans. 3. I believe that we must move toward a Single-Payer Healthcare system so that Americans can be relieved of their medical debt and can guarantee a future for every person. 4. I support the demilitarization of police and the establishment of community-driven oversight commitees.

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

I support HR676, John Conyers' bill advocating Medicare for All on the federal level. However, I believe that we must move toward the nationalization of our healthcare system and the implementation of a single-payer healthcare for all. Other nations have successfully implemented this style of plan because they recognize that healthcare is a human right. We must move toward this type of system through any means necessary. Medicare for all is a good start, but single-payer universal healthcare must be our end point.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

The government's role is to regulate industries and prevent the run-away effect that we see when for-profit motives are the only things represented in our society. Many large corporations did not pay federal taxes in 2017 and 2018. We see their effects in things like the repeal of Net Neutrality by the FCC, a critical component of free speech in our 21st Century society. This also directly resulted in places not receiving the subsidies from the federal government that they need, our deficit increasing, and under representation of working class persons in our society. We must close corporate loopholes, increase taxes on the wealthy, and demand that corporations and the rich contribute a fair and equitable share to our society. I support a robin hood tax on Wall Street, a reinstatement and increase of Dodd-Frank style regulations on Wall Street, and federal programs to sponsor Worker owned co-ops. I also support a federal jobs guarantee to create a government competitor in the marke

What changes should be made to the tax code?

Quite frankly, the burden of running the government has been shifted to working class persons and removed from the wealthy. There is a demonstrable and direct relationship with the amount that we tax wealth and the well-being of our society. We must work toward empowering and supporting the 99%. We can do this by removing the cap on social security contributions, taxing unearned wealth, reimplementing the estate tax, and penalizing corporations that hire minimum wage workers ad nauseum like Wal-Mart. I also support an implementation of a Robin Hood style tax to help lift up our middle and working class persons.

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

The immediate implementation of a federal jobs guarantee putting Americans that want to work to work and guaranteeing them a livable wage, healthcare, and other benefits that would typically be accompanied with a job. We can utilize this program to help push forward with an infrastructure that will bring Amnerica's highway and rail systems into the modern age. It also will force corporations to compete with our federal jobs program, increasing wages for workers all across America and raising the standard for our working class Americans.

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

I believe that we must eliminate the contribution cap on Social Security and require that the wealthiest among us contribute their fair share to the Social Security program. I also support a ban of all withdrawals from the Social Security fund excepting with a provisio that any money withdrawn from Social Security must be approved by a vote of Congress and must be paid back to the Social Security fund with interest included.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

Our founding fathers believed that the only experience that you needed to have was that you were above the age of 25 and that you were a representative of the community. Washington's 9th District has one of the largest voting blocks of millennial and working class voters of any region in the United States. I am a working class woman, I pay student loans every month, I have a mortgage that I work hard to pay, I have had a full time job for as long as I can remember, am a survivor of sexual assault, and have had to fight back as a proud strong woman. Representation matters and I believe that as a working class woman that I am the right person for this job.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I represent people, not corporations. I will never take a dime of corporate money as long as I'm in office. The number one threat to our democracy and the well-being of our society is the effect of money on our politics. We must create a free and fair election system that represents people, not corporations across the board.
