Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

Before 20 weeks at the option of the mother. After 20 weeks only for rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

Collect telephone meta-data on all U.S. residents and all travelers to the U.S. But use of this data should be carefully and judicially monitored. The government should monitor all churches and other gathering places frequented by Muslims. Any suspicious behavior should be investigated by proper authorities.

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

The fundamental human weakness of trying to gain and hold power over others. It is very important to create limits and checks on power for governmental leaders to make sure that they cannot abuse the powers which come with the office they hold.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a Protestant Christian by upbringing and adult choice. I attempt to abide by Christian moral principles such as the Golden Rule and being a Good Samaritan (good neighbor). I have a scientific frame of mind and do not believe in physical miracles. For me God is a spirit.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Somewhat Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

On my campaign website, Jack Heidel for Senate, I state that I am a fiscal conservative and a social moderate and this should be quite clear from my stated views on a number of issues. This averages out to somewhat conservative.

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

There is a detailed answer to this question on my campaign website, Jack Heidel for Senate, referred to as American Healthcare Reform. Briefly, the employer mandate should be modified so that individual employees can migrate to personal insurance at their own discretion, using age-based tax credits rather than the income-based tax credits established under the ACA. This will save, the employee, the employer, and the government large sums of money when widely implemented. Medicaid and Medicare can be migrated to similar systems.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

By keeping marginal tax rates as low as possible consistent with raising adequate revenue to pay our bills. Also by abolishing unneeded regulations which interfere with business without providing significant general value.

What changes should be made to the tax code?

The new tax law has many good individual features (such as lowering the corporate tax rate and immediate expensing for business investment) but should have been made revenue neutral by establishing offsets in other tax provisions. Increasing our already enormous national debt by $1 trillion over ten years (as was done) is highly irresponsible.

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

By encouraging new business investment.

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

By a combination of raising the income cap on which the SS payroll tax is based and by SLOWLY raising the age for full SS benefits to 70.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

1. I have been blogging about our huge debt and how to reduce it for several years at It Does Not Add Up (itdoesnotaddup.com). I know what needs to be done. 2. As a social moderate I am willing to take stands which disagree with Republican orthodoxy. This demonstrates that I am an independent thinker and am not afraid of standing up to the political establishment. 3. As a retired UNO Math Professor, I am not looking to start a new career. My complete focus is on reducing debt and deficits and I would start doing this on day one if elected. It is unlikely that I would run for a second term in six years.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

It is an uphill battle to take on an incumbent in a Primary. I am doing this because the incumbent, Deb Fischer, is ignoring our enormous and out-of-control national debt. In fact she has just recently voted twice to make it worse than it already is. She voted for the new tax law which increases debt by $1 trillion over ten years. She also voted for the new two year budget which will increase debt by another $1 trillion over the next ten years. Such voting is highly irresponsible. We need more people in Congress who will make it a very high priority to fix our debt problem.
