18. What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers within the Constitution?

The founders reflected enlightenment values, but cannot be defined by a single concept. The Constitution is somewhat modeled on Jefferson's and Madison's interpretation of Montesquieu Considerations on the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and their Decline - which is based on the writings of Polybius. The model argued by both Montesquieu and Polybius was a mix of democracy, kingship, and aristocracy -- with checks and balances. The goal was to prevent a tyrannical executive.

19.
