16. What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers within the Constitution?

They experienced the tyranny imposed by the King, who practiced unchecked despotism. Basic rights- life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness- endowed by our Creator, were denied, including religious liberties. The King made judges dependent on his will alone, kept standing armies among the people in times of peace (without legislative consent) and committed other offenses on human rights. Representative democracy, not pure democracy, was selected as the new Constitutional remedy.

17. The founders established pure democracy in the Constitution because they believed that it is the best form of government to ensure the safety and equitable treatment of all citizens.
