Where the Parties Stand
Democratic Party Platform
- Calls for government funded abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy, by “repealing the Hyde Amendment,” which bars federal money for elective abortion. (Page 32)
- Will “oppose and fight to overturn federal and state laws that create barriers to reproductive health and rights.” (Page 32)
- “Support the repeal of the global gag rule (also known as the Mexico City Policy) and measures like the Helms Amendment, which limit safe access to abortion. We will also restore and expand American contributions to the United Nations Population Fund to help guarantee access to health care for women and children around the world…” (Page 82-83)
- “Democrats continue to support abolishing the death penalty." (Page 38)
- “We believe unequivocally … that every woman should be able to access high-quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion. We will repeal the Title X domestic gag rule and restore federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides vital preventive and reproductive health care for millions of people, especially low-income people, and people of color, and LGBTQ+ people, including in underserved areas.” (Page 32)
- “We recognize that quality, affordable comprehensive health care; medically accurate, LGBTQ+ inclusive, age-appropriate sex education; and the full range of family planning services are all essential to ensuring that people can decide if, when, and how to start a family.” (Page 32)
- “Democrats oppose restrictions on medication abortion care that are inconsistent with the most recent medical and scientific evidence and that do not protect public health.” (Page 32)
Republican Party Platform
- “… we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed.” (Page 13)
- “We… affirm the dignity of women by protecting the sanctity of human life. Numerous studies have shown that abortion endangers the health and well-being of women, and we stand firmly against it.” (Page 36)
- “We call for a permanent ban on federal funding and subsidies for abortion and healthcare plans that include abortion coverage.” (Page 37)
- “We oppose the non-consensual withholding of care or treatment from people with disabilities, including newborns, the elderly, and infirm, just as we oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide…” (Page 39)
- The Party “opposes federal government funding of abortion overseas and calls for restoring the Mexico City Policy, to bar federal money from going to foreign organizations which ‘provide or promote abortion,’ or are complicit in China’s one-child policy.”
- “We urge all states and Congress to make it a crime to acquire, transfer, or sell fetal tissues from elective abortions for research…” (Page 13)
- “We condemn the Supreme Court’s activist decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt striking down commonsense Texas laws providing for basic health and safety standards in abortion clinics.” (Page 14)
What the Bible Says
The Bible teaches that all life is sacred from conception to natural death. God knows those who are in the womb. Psalm 139 reminds us that: “You knit me in my mother’s womb” and “my frame was known to you when I was made in secret.” Psalm 22 says, “You have been my guide since I was first formed.” Psalm 51:5 shows that the unborn has a sin nature, meaning that a preborn child is already created in God’s image.
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."
(Psalms 139:13-14 ESV).
